Jose Rivera’s SONNETS FOR AN OLD CENTURY at Spooky Action Theater

Washington’s highly regarded Spooky Action Theater, long a leader in innovative and creative programming, features two debuts to close its 2022-23 season: one is the first production selected and helmed by the company’s new artistic director, Elizabeth Dinkova; the other is the area premiere of a powerfully resonant play by one of the country’s leading dramatists, Obie Award-winner Jose Rivera.

The play is Sonnets for an Old Century, and it will have a limited run of only 10 performances from June 15 through June 25 in an experiential, site-specific staging throughout three floors of Spooky Action’s home at the Universalist National Memorial Church, 1810 16th St NW in Washington.

Sonnets features a series of related monologues all set in versions of the afterlife that weave a tapestry of poetic, magical meditations exploring yearning, connection, and community through a diverse lens. For this production, the director notes they’ll be using almost every room, nook, and corner of the church space, from stairways to the sanctuary, with audiences invited to make their way throughout as part of the emotional and psychic journey of the piece.

Enjoy director Dinkova speaking about the project in her own words. And for more information, or to purchase tickets, visit https://www.spookyaction.org/current-show.html
