Best Medicine Rep launches their 10th-anniversary season with a farce by their founder, playwright John Morogiello, playing at The Writers Center in Bethesday October 9th - 25th.
The play, a farce getting its local premiere after winning awards originally when it first performed some 15 years ago, is Stonewall's Bust, and the author shared his thoughts on the play—and revisiting it all these years later—in our chat.
In the piece, Morogiello draws on a tried-and-true tradition of farce: dropping a seemingly innocuous and ordinary, if hapless, victim into the middle of a comic maelstrom of his own making, then whipping it all up into a spiralling frenzy of the outlandish and unexpected. When a Yankee arrives to meet the proud Southern family of his beloved fiancee, he accidentally breaks a priceless bust of Stonewall Jackson at the family's Heritage Museum. One well-meant white lie, intended to absolve himself of guilt, sets in motion an escalating series of complications and unleashes unintended consequences of all sorts: battling ghosts, a live-televised exorcism, and an entire community in an uproar.
