Continuing a longstanding partnership that has spanned more than half-a-century, Washington Performing Arts welcomes back to DC Dance Theatre of Harlem with an exclusive two-day program that showcases the company's signature take on Stravinsky's Firebird along with two other DTH favorites.
On Friday, September 25th and Saturday, September 26th, The National Theatre in Washington will transform with a full range of lavish spectacle, intimate emotional intensity, and breadth of musical imagination. For three performances, Dance Theatre of Harlem will feature a version of Firebird that pairs Stravinsky's 1945 arrangement of his groundbreaking score with choreography by John Taras, reimagining the source fable of love and transformation into a Caribbean setting with lush costumes and scenic design by the legendary Geoffery Holder.
Accompanying this in the program are George Balanchine's Donizetti Variations, inspired by the Italian composer's opera Don Sebastian and providing a technical showcase for the company's dancers; and Return, choreographed for DTH's 30th anniversary to music by James Brown and Aretha Franklin, in what the company's Artistic Director calls a fusion of "post-modern urban neoclassicism."
