National safe boating week is May 16-22.
Nationwide in 2024 there were 3,887 boating accidents reported:
–556 were fatalities
–20% of the total deaths were alcohol related
–The majority of the accidents were caused by human werror or poor judgement and NOT the result of faulty equipment or environmental factors.
–About 85% of all drowning victims were not wearing life jackets.
–More than two thirds of the fatalities are suffered by people without formal boater education.
