Better late than never for this vaudeville duo
“Late-blooming Vaudevillians” is how Happenstance Theatre pitches the comic double bill of Diz and Izzy Aster, a theatrical duo who bring their period harmonies and fictitiously fractious marital disharmony to the stage via the expert clowning and seasoned wit of Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell.
Selections of this tried-and-true material–which includes everything from classic slapstick and banter to favorite melodies from the golden age of musical hall and more throwback goodies besides–get a featured showcase as part of the latest installment of the recurring Clown Cabaret: May 19th at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda.
The minds behind the mayhem joined me over the phone to talk about the piece (providing more than just a passing glimpse of the collaborative dynamic that they bring to the act) as well as the value of the Clown Cabaret in general–which offers a sampler platter of established and emerging clowning and variety talent, regaling audiences with selections drawn from existing material on up through experimental works-in-progress.
