Booknotes investigates a mystery novel set in India
By Judith Krummeck | Posted in Booknotes, Host Blogs | 2 Comments
It’s 1920s Bombay, and Perveen Mistry becomes one of the first female lawyers in India. Her legal work turns to sleuthing as she tries to work out the mystery behind the three widows of Malabar Hill, who are living in purdah. Sujata Massey – half Indian herself – is the author.

“The Widows of Malabor Hill” was of interest to me for two main reasons, the setting,India at the beginning of the 20th century and the plot, a murder mystery in which the reader is invited to figure out who committed it. (I am rereading the novel in order to find out the clues that I missed.)
I was also struck by the terrible manner in which women were treated.
Thank you, Judith for introducing us to this very interesting and fasinating novel.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this novel, Margaret. Sujata is a master planner of her novels, and I think she in ingenious the way she plants her clues.
