Baltimore Concert Opera (BCO) announces an addition to its 2013-14 season with a special, one night only event:  The Life and Music of Maria Callas.
This production is an up close and personal experience with one of today’s finest
sopranos, highlighting the work and life of La Divina herself.  Francesca Mondanaro will perform
arias for which Maria Callas was known and Fabrizio Melano, (Metropolitan Opera), a close
friend of Callas will narrate with never-before-told stories.
Maria Callas is one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic gifts. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto opera of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.

Her dramatic life and personal tragedy have often overshadowed Callas the artist in the popular press. However, her artistic achievements were such that Leonard Bernstein called her “The Bible of opera” and her influence was so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote “nearly thirty years after her death, she’s still the definition of the diva as artist — and one of classical music’s best-selling vocalists.”
