Painted scarves

By Diana Ross | Posted in Staff Blogs | No Comments

While I know WBJC’s blog isn’t my blog, I know enough of our members are crafty people (volunteers love to bring in their knitting!) so I thought I’d share a class I took last week with Sara Bixler at The Mannings Hand Weaving School in East Berlin PA.

The class was Painted Warps on the Rigid Heddle Loom. The goal was to make a one-of-a-kind painted scarf.

We started off with yarn! We started applying dyes:

Once we made a ‘pattern’, we sealed it up and set the dye with heat

Once the warp was dry, we put them on our looms and started weaving!

and finally….

My classmates’ projects were truly beautiful!

What a great experience! I cannot say enough good things about everyone involved, especially the Mannings. It was a wonderful feeling to stretch my creative wings and to have a place so close (just a bit over an hour drive from Baltimore) to tickle my inner-artiste is just fantastic. I can’t wait to go back!
