This week Mary and I each tasted a fabulous Rioja Reserva. Mary’s came from a very good friend and I bought mine to be enjoyed with some very good friends! Both were amazing examples of an old and distinguished tradition. Both of these wines were mostly Tempranillo with some Garnacha thrown in to blend.
Mary’s wine was the 2004 Vina Ardanza Reserva Rioja. (Rioja Alta if you want to get specific) $35. This wine had spent 36 months in American oak and seven years in the bottle. The result something smooth, sophisticated and powerful!
My wine was the 2002 R. Lopez De Heredia Vina Tondonilla. $48. yes it’s steep but when you have fabulous lamb persillade on the grill you want something worthy of it! This was enjoyed after a fabulous afternoon at Grand Cru with my colleagues Mark and Kati. Recently on a vacation to Barcelona I bought a bottle for a mere 20 Euros! Another good reason to visit Spain! Enjoy the show…We enjoyed the wines!
