Another one bites the dust
It’s always a shocking and sad thing when we lose yet another classical station, and it reminds me how lucky we are here in Baltimore!
From the Portland Press Herald:
Classical radio network WBACH’s southern Maine station will go off the air next week.
The station — WBQW, heard in the Portland area on 104.7 FM — was sold in a bankruptcy auction earlier this year to a company identified as Mainestream Media.
The new owner will take over that station at 5 p.m. on Sept. 13, which will end the playing of classical music on the station. The new owner has not made its plan for the station public.

ggggrrrr… don’t get me started. I know nothing about the business end of commercial radio broadcasting, but I do know that the DC/Baltimore area is very volatile… and once again, the demise of this station in Portland is a reminder of how very fortunate we are here to have WBJC. (I was going to go into a tirade about the whole WETA / WGMS thing but I’ve reined myself in!)
All best wishes to everyone at WBJC.

I sometimes wonder how a commercial station can be successful with a format like classical music. I guess if there are no competing stations it could thrive, especially in a market with a vibrant arts/music community. I got the impression from the article that there were other stations in the state that carried classical, so this might be an HD channel feature the station in question offers. Here’s to hoping!
WBJC is the fortunate one to have such a devoted and supportive audience!
